Birdwatching

Birdwatching (also know as "birding") is the observation and study of birds with the naked eye, or usually through a visual enhancement device, most commonly binoculars. Most "birders" or "birdwatchers" pursue this activity for recreational or social reasons, unlike ornithologists, who are engaged in the formal scientific study of birds.

The most active times of the year for bird watching are during spring and fall migration when the greatest variety of birds may be seen. Many birds are traveling north or south to wintering or nesting locations. Early morning is typically the a great time for bird watching since many birds are searching for food, which makes them easier to find and observe. Birdwatching can be one of the quieter and more relaxing outdoor activities. However, birders who are keen "rarity-seekers" will travel long distances to see a new species to add to the list of birds they have personally observed.

Twitching is a British term used to mean "the pursuit of a previously located rare bird". In North America it is more often called "chasing", though the British usage is starting to catch on in North America, especially among younger birders. Wikipedia

Some of the equipment commonly used for birdwatching includes binoculars and a telescope or spotting scope with tripod, a notepad, and one or more field guides. Photography has always been a part of bird watching and with the advent of affordable digital cameras (which can be used in conjunction with binoculars or a telescope) this has been turning a much more widespread hobby.

Bird watching sites:

Birders are excited to add species to their lists and field notes, but unfortunately not every one is lucky enough to live in an area with large numbers of bird species. A good resource in finding new and exciting species is going to an association near your area, dedicated to animals and nature, they will help you to find the best places to watch birds. Another way to find birds in your area is to find books on migrating birds and find out when new birds are most likely going to be in your area.

As more land is used to accommodate the ever growing human population, yards and city parks become important bird habitat. Diversified landscaping and feeding stations offer an oasis of resources in the middle of the human domain. Feeding and watching birds gives families the opportunity to practice conservation right in their own yards. Children can learn and enjoy the wonders of nature right from the kitchen window.
